simon's surgery

monkeyboy in a dignified pose that belies his goofy personality

It was a pretty short grace period managing the glaucoma with just the eyedrops.
The damage to his right optic nerve had already rendered him blind in that eye.We were managing the pressure in that eye at this point to keep him comfortable and working to keep the left eye visual as long as possible.

Sadly, the pressures spiked yesterday. Another painful episode. So, off to the hospital in Gaithersburg and the good Dr. Nunnery.

We knew already that we were facing an inevitable surgery to preserve the vision Simon's left eye and a surgery that would completely disable the right eye. The question was how long could we hold a status quo  with the meds and put it off. Time's up. So today, right now, actually, Simon is having the surgery. A ciliary body ablation on the blind right eye. This will allow the blind eye to stay in place and keep him comfortable without the constant risk of a painful pressure spike. A trans-scleral laser surgery on the left eye will lessen the build up of fluid and pressure in his eye and, fingers crossed, preserve his vision. It is not without strings attached,  eyedrops for maintenance, etc, but it is our best hope right now.

I am sure that is more info than you ever wanted to know about canine glaucoma, sorry, but that is what we are dealing with right now.

Send My Boy some healing vibes, ok?
