After almost eight months of not touching a brush...I spent six straight days in the studio...painting.
Skip was away on a workshop for a week. I was caught up on other projects. I cleared my priorities and got my ass out to the studio...
To Paint.
I have eight, yes, 8, paintings going. And I am Very Happy with how they are progressing.
When I spoke to Skip on the phone last week he said" Gee, it didn't take you long to get back into it!" No, not long at all, if you don't count the eight months I couldn't even make eye contact with a tube of paint!
The difference this time, is that I have been through this before. Enough times not to let it rattle me. There are ebbs and flows. Periods of focused, feverish activity, like a free fall, then there are the gestation periods. I have never stopped..."painting". I am always storing away sensations, impressions, ideas...the sound of the waves in the cove in Maine, the feel of the fog on my cheeks, the solar heat that fills up my soul batteries in New Mexico, the taste of green chili and the tang of a perfect margarita. Everything, everyday is downloading into my resource, so that when I approach the blank canvas or board...there is a deep, rich stew to dish up.
I am still working on the "Oysters and Pearls." It is a good source for me. (Who can ever know what is going to do it, flip the "on" switch for an artist?) There is still a lot to be mined there. What is fun this time is to abandon all agendas and just keep pushing the form further and further from description. Ultimately, there is No Oyster, there is No Pearl. ("There is no spoon." If you get the movie reference, email me)
There is only painting: sensation and surface and color, mark, texture, rhythm.
Damn, it feels good to be back!
